Black Breastfeeding Caucus (BBC)

The Black Breastfeeding Caucus (BBC), is a national collective of service providers, advocates, academics and other stakeholders committed to equitable breastfeeding support for Black families.

The BBC is a cogent vehicle for advocacy and technical assistance that harnesses the group’s varied experiences working in research, advocacy media, in direct service to Black families and in other areas of social change.

The mission of the Black Breastfeeding Caucus is to mobilize families, communities, and public/private institutions to create strategies, make decisions and implement action steps that result in equitable breastfeeding support for Black families.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee acts in the service of the BBC and its individual committees in order to elevate the organization as the voice of the Black breastfeeding community on critical issues in the infant feeding landscape. Our activities include developing position statements, press releases, and communication strategy, as well as providing consultation to individual committees via monthly office hours. Co-chairs: Elizabeth Gray Bayne, Kimberly Seals Allers

  • Aligned Interests/Skills: journalism, blogging, social media strategy, filmmaking, photography, web design, etc.

Research Committee

Through research discovery, development, and translation the BBC Research Committee (RC) works to enhance breastfeeding support and behavior for Black families and communities in methods that reflect a culturally responsive, social ecological systems approach. Our vision is to help bolster the efforts of systems, organizations, and individuals to improve access to equitable breastfeeding support. The BBC-RC meets monthly and is conducting a scoping review of literature to summarize and disseminate research findings regarding breastfeeding interventions for Black parents in the U.S. from a Black feminist perspective. This review will highlight current understanding and identify gaps in evidence to guide future work. BBC-RC members have robust translational research expertise, significant practice experience, and meaningful community engagement. Co-Chairs: Dr. Angela Johnson and Dr. Urmeka Jefferson.

Community & Family Committee

The Family and Community Committee is building partnerships with other national organizations focused on the well-being of Black people; and creating a social advocacy kit to educate families on essential breastfeeding topics, Black health providers and breastfeeding support groups.

  • Aligned Positions: families, concerned citizens, grassroots, community-based organizations, community leader and/or organizers

Advocacy Committee

he Advocacy Committee is formulating an advocacy agenda that includes the Biden Administration and the new Congress Co-Chairs: Janina Daniels MHSA, CPSTI, CWC and Tina Sherman

  • Aligned Positions: public health professional, policy maker, government leader, advocacy groups, employers

Direct Service Committee

The Direct Service Committee envisions elevating Black lactation professionals while uplifting the Black breastfeeding dyad. Co-Chairs: Renae Green IBCLC, CLC and Nasheeda Pollard, MPH, CLC

  • Aligned Positions: doctor, midwife, nurse, lactation consultant, breastfeeding peer counselor, doula, community health worker, clinicians, early childhood professional, breastfeeding group leader, etc.
